Logos explained

There are many different types of logos. Which type you want largely depends on you and your business. How do you want to be seen by your customers and your peers? Let's briefly go over the points that make a good logo.

  1. A good logo is typically simple. A simple design allows people to more easily recognise and can highlight a specific personality of the brand.
  2. Similarly, it needs to be memorable. A great logo creates a connection with its audience. One glance at the logo should be enough for people to know it's yours.
  3. Versatility. Your logo should have multiple variations that work in all situations. For example, a primary logo, secondary logo, submark and a favicon. This ensures compatibility at all sizes and resolutions.
  4. It has to be relevant to your business or industry. Audiences need to be able to make the connection to what your business does, and good logo uses elements and fonts to help form that link.
  5. Lastly, it needs to be adaptable. Trends come and go as time passes and your logo should remain viable with minimal refreshes and without the need of a full scale redesign every few years.

Great, now we know what makes a good logo. But wait, there's more! What kind of logo do you want? There are a few different types that we'll try to break down for you.

  1. Wordmark
  2. Wordmark logos are probably the most basic type of logo you can get, but basic doesn't mean that there isn't a lot of thought involved in the design process. This logo type spells out the full name of the business using a distinct typeface and a specific colour palette without the use of a graphical element.
  3. Lettermark
  4. Lettermarks are also known as monograms and usually consistent of the brands initials. These are a great option for businesses with long names that want to have a concise logo.
  5. Symbol
  6. Symbol logos can also be called pictoral or brandmarks. It's a graphical based design which is recognised without the use of text.
  7. Abstract
  8. Abstract logos are designs that don't mimic real life objects and take a more creative expression to emphasise the personality of a brand. They usually have to be used in conjunction with wordmarks until audiences get more familiar with the design and are able to recognise the logo without any text. Because of the nature of the design, it can be risky for new, smaller businesses to use this type of logo.
  9. Emblem
  10. Emblem logos are highly detailed and are designed to feel like a stamp, badge or seal. They are by far the hardest to pull off in modern times, which is why you don't see too many companies using this style of logo anymore.
  11. Mascot
  12. Mascots are endearing and memorable. They usually represent a character that personifies the brand. These types of logos are popular in the food industry as they're friendly and relatable.
  13. Combination
  14. Combination marks are versatile by design as they use the brand name and an icon together or seperately while being identifiable either way. Most brands use a variation of logo types and this tends to be one of the primary designs of most brands.
  15. Dynamic
  16. Dynamic logos are a more modern take on brand identity as they are able to change based on the context of their usage. They can be animated or static with different elements being used in different situations. They're very versatile but require a lot of work to put together.
