It’s a fair question, and one worth asking before you spend any money. You can ask an AI to build you a website in an afternoon, or sign up to a site builder for a few pounds a month. So why pay someone to do it for you?
AI can make a page that looks good
AI is very good at producing something that looks the part. Give it a prompt and you’ll get a page with a hero, a few sections and a colour scheme that hangs together.
This is good for a visually pleasing landing page - but what you won’t get is a site that performs. Looking good and working well are two different problems, and it’s the second one that costs you customers. AI doesn’t know your business, your customers, or what you need someone to actually do once they land on the page. It answers the prompt in front of it, not the goals behind it.
It also can’t test anything. It cannot open your site on a five year old Android phone, or on a tablet held sideways, or with a screen reader, or at 200% zoom. These aren’t edge cases - they’re a serious chunk of real visitors, and they’re exactly where generated code tends to come apart.
Then there’s everything that isn’t code. Vibe coding hands you the files and stops. It doesn’t buy your domain, set up your hosting, sort your email, keep the site online, or fix it at 9pm on a Friday when something breaks. All of that would still be yours to work out.
Site builders work, if you have the time
Site builders are an option if you have the hours and the patience. It’s still a lot of work, but you can get a working site out of one.
The catch is the hours. It’s a proper time commitment, and it’s time taken away from running your business. Plenty of people start one, get most of the way through, and leave it sitting half-finished for months because something more urgent came up.
The other catch is performance. Sites built this way tend to carry a lot of weight they never use, which slows them down, and a slow site both ranks worse and loses visitors before the page has finished loading. You also get limited control over the details search engines and AI assistants read to work out what your business does and whether to recommend it. That matters more every year, and we’ve written up SEO, AIO and GEO if you want the longer version.
What we do instead
We take the whole lot off your plate.
We start with your business: what you do, who it’s for, and what you need the site to achieve. Everything gets built around that, so what you end up with fits your business rather than the other way round.
Then the parts nobody much enjoys doing themselves:
- Hosting sorted. Included, running, and looked after.
- Changes handled. Send us a message and we’ll make them for you.
- Built to perform. Fast, responsive on every screen size, and accessible by design rather than checked at the end.
- Tailored SEO. Optimised for search engines and for the AI assistants people increasingly ask for recommendations.
All of it can be done without meetings, so it fits around your day instead of interrupting it.
You’re also backing a small business
This one matters to us. Work with us and you’re dealing with people who need your project to go well, because nearly everything we do comes from someone recommending us to someone else.
You’re not a ticket in a queue at a large company, and your site isn’t one of ten million on a platform. You get someone who cares whether the thing actually works, and who you can simply message when it doesn’t.
Have a think
If you’ve got the time spare and you quite enjoy that sort of thing, a site builder might well suit you. AI is genuinely useful as well - but as a tool, not as an all-encompassing solution.
If you’d rather that time went into your actual business, that’s exactly what we’re here for. Have a look at what we offer, or drop us a message and tell us what you’re after. 😺
